6/12/11 Prayers, Readings, and Worship Helps

March 9th, 2011

Invocation

O Lord, send your Holy Spirit as once you did in Jerusalem so long ago. Join us in this place and time and give us the fire that transforms and renews. Burn away all our complacency, and consume the cords that bind us to the ways of a dying world. Give us the life that lives in your praise and service. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Call to Worship

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.

Come, Holy Spirit! Break into our gathering!

And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind.

Come, Holy Spirit! Stir us with your power!

Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them.

Come, Holy Spirit! Set our hearts on fire!

And all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit.

Come, Holy Spirit! Fill us again with your love!

Prayer of Confession

O Holy Spirit, we remember today how you came to the disciples with a rush of wind and tongues of fire. Yet we confess to you that our faith has become stagnant and lukewarm. No wind blows. No fire burns. We have become comfortable and complacent. Forgive us, we pray. Fill us again with your power. Set our hearts on fire again that we may give ourselves completely to you. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

Words of Assurance

God declares, “I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh . . . and everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Know with confidence that, by God’s grace, you are forgiven and renewed.

Invitation to the Offering

Pentecost people! We have received gifts too numerous to count. Now we have a chance to give in thanks and joy. Your offering will enable this church to be a Pentecost presence in this community and the world— to reach out in passionate commitment and bring the wind and fire of the Spirit to a people and a world that so desperately need it.

Benediction

Go from this place knowing that the Holy Spirit goes with you. But be warned, when you follow the Spirit, you never know where you might end up. But there are some things you will know. You will know that you are not alone. You will know power. And you will know peace. Amen.
