The “March For Our Lives” rallies scheduled for March 24, 2018, are part of the #NeverAgain movement. The movement was launched by survivors of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The rally is a protest against gun violence and will be held in Washington, D.C., with “sister marches” planned to take place in major cities across the United States and other countries. According to The Washington Post, as many as five-hundred-thousand attendees are expected, as stated in the permit application. The Mall was considered at first as a site for the rally, but due to a scheduling conflict with a film crew’s permit, another location will be chosen.

Support for the rally has been abundant. According to the GoFundMe page for the March For Our Lives, more than 300 million dollars has been donated, in addition to donations from Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg and George and Amal Clooney.

Mission and purpose

A part of the mission statement for the rally is: “School safety is not a political issue . . . the mission and focus of March For Our Lives is to demand that a comprehensive and effective bill be immediately brought before Congress to address these gun issues. No special interest group, no political agenda is more critical than timely passage of legislation to effectively address the gun violence issues that are rampant in our country.”

As Christians, we are called to affect the world for good, stand for truth and justice, and stand in the gap for those whose voices are shut out as they cry for justice, comfort and support. We should cry out as did the prophet Amos, “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream” (Amos 5:24). Our prayer is that these bold and courageous youth will feel heard and supported in their mission.
