From Here to Eternity (A Four-Part Series about Heaven)

January 11th, 2013

Preached by Jorge Acevedo and Wes Olds at Grace Church, a United Methodist congregation with multiple locations in the Ft. Myers, Fla. Area.

Heaven is our hope as followers of Jesus, but what does the Bible really say about it? This four-week series looks carefully at the timeless truths of Scripture about eternity and its implications for our lives now! Theme verses are Jesus’ words in John 14:1-4 (NIV):

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.  In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus is teaching us that “eternity” affects our “here and now.”

1. What's the Big Deal about Heaven

In every culture and in every time, humanity has been fascinated with eternity. God placed it there. Jesus’ resurrection from the dead signals a new reality for Christ-followers called eternal life.

2. A Grown-up Vision of Heaven

People have a lot of confusion about heaven. It’s often a mixture of the Bible, philosophy, popular literature, theatre, and movies. But the Bible gives us clear, consistent understandings of eternity.

3. The Best is Yet to Come!

Do you really believe this? Do you believe that the best is yet to come? The Bible teaches Christ-followers to live life not looking in the rearview mirror but with a hope for eternity.

4. What Am I Doing on Earth for Heaven’s Sake?

Because of the reality of heaven, we are called to care for the earth, love all people, work for justice, and share the Good News.
