Super ads of faith

January 31st, 2018

This Sunday is Super Bowl LII (52)! Many Americans will be watching the big game and all the highly anticipated television commercials. Regardless of the game’s outcome, advertisers who spent 5 to 10 million dollars for an ad spot are hoping we respond to those ads by buying or remaining loyal to their products. For advertising agencies, the big win will be marked by the number of hashtags used on social media about ads and products. The more we share, the more they sell.

Brand loyalty

There is nothing wrong with being loyal to certain brands, sharing what you like and sporting favorite logos. Creating your personal image or style is a way of expressing yourself and/or what is important to you. For some, the opposite is true: Brands are meaningless, and the clothes they wear or the products they use have no connection to what is important to them. Whether we like it or not, we are often judged by others for what we wear or the products we use, or lack thereof. As humans, it can be difficult not to judge or make assumptions about people based on how they look or their possessions.

God loyalty

As Christians, we are called to see beyond all that in others, as well as to strive to go beyond that in ourselves. Our first priority is meant to be our relationship with God. But how many of us wake up and spend time in prayer or Scripture study before getting ready for our day? Our next priority is meant to be living as Jesus taught. Another tall order. If we’re honest, we must admit we all have room for improvement. Super Bowl ads hook us in and get us talking about a product. Let’s think about how our godly attitudes and actions can represent Christ to the world so that it gets people talking about Jesus.

Question of the day: What are you a walking ad for?
Focal scriptures: Joshua 24:14-28; Isaiah 9:6-7; 1 Corinthians 12:1-11; Ephesians 6:10-18
