Home Improvement (Four-Part Sermon Series)
Everybody knows their house needs regular maintenance to keep things in good repair. But we sometimes fail to recognize how much our homes need spiritual maintenance. “Home Improvement” is a four-part sermon series designed to help families build stronger Christian homes.
1. It Takes a Family—Joshua 24:15 and Acts 16:32-34
This sermon emphasizes the importance of Christian homes, as well as providing seven specific and practical biblical strategies for building a stronger family:
Faith in Jesus Christ
Ask for and Offer Forgiveness
Make and Keep Commitments
Invest in Each Other
Listen to Each Other
Yield in Love to Each Other
2. Love and Marriage—Song of Songs 2:1-16 and Ephesians 5:20-25
This sermon emphasizes the importance of Christian marriage by using three Hebrew word pictures for love to help married couples love each other with a “RAD”ically biblical love:
Rayah (love of a close friend)
Ahavah (committed love)
Dod (sexually intimate love)
3. Meet the Parents—Proverbs 22:1-6 and Ephesians 6:1-4
This sermon emphasizes the importance of Christian parenting, and provides a list of six different “Dos” and “Don’ts” for biblically effective parenting:
Don’t provoke your children to anger.
Don’t show favoritism with your children.
Don’t lead a life of sin before your children.
Do love your children.
Do discipline your children in love.
Do teach your children God’s ways.
4. A Legacy That Lasts—Jeremiah 35:18-19 and II Timothy 1:1-5
This sermon focuses on how to leave a multigenerational legacy of faith, asking the question, “Everyone leaves a spiritual legacy, whether for good or bad—what legacy will you leave?” Explore the specific biblical example of Jonadab, an Old Testament character whose godly legacy stretched over 240 years.
